Ubuntu’s full desktop OS coming to multi-core Android devices (update: video) — Engadget
Ubuntu now runs on multi-core Android devices and your handset can grant a full desktop experience when docked with a display and a keyboard. It’s a customized version of Ubuntu that plays nice with Android, the two OS’s sharing data and services while running simultaneously. So, you can still access telephony and texts from the Ubuntu environment while enjoying all the computing capabilities it has to offer, including: Ubuntu TV, virtualization tools for running Windows applications, desktop web browsers, and Ubuntu apps built for ARM.
i’m way into this.
(and i answered, because i love infrastructure)
go to tumblr / settings / post by email, put the email address they give you into your phone’s address book. if you send a picture message (or text or email) to that address from your phone, it will automagically upload to your blog (unless tumblr is having issues). on my old windows mobile phone i could include a photo caption with the picture message, but my iphone splits them into two messages which become two posts, so anymore i have to go back and tag stuff later. not sure how well windows phone 7 handles that part.
LG Optimus Vu officially revealed ahead of MWC with stylus, 1.5GHz CPU (Updated) — Engadget
appars i’m never going to pay a premium for a this years model hot phone.
i ran with a flipphone on verizon for two years, then right when my contract came up for renewal, the new every two discount dropped from $100 off to $50. so i jumped over to att who had a deal to get a refurb treo 750 (rocking windows mobile 5), figuring i could get a discounted iphone later. as it turned out, att hates new customers, so they spent 23 months offering to let me upgrade at full price, aka $600+ for a new iphone or android slate or whatever.
i was all set to jump ship, but when renewal time came up, the discounts on brand new hardware were still pretty weak, but refurbished or last-gen hardware? startingly good. i got a refurbished iphone 3gs for //nine dollars//.
appars att wants you to suffer at first, but then stay forever, because now that i’m a year into a renewed contract, i can upgrade to a brand new motorola atrix 1 for ten bucks. and since the desktop dock and laptop dock for webtop phones has adopted a new standardized connection, the now obsolete atrix 1 docks cost less than half as much as the new versions. i could get an android phone with a netbook //and// a media center pc it plugs into for under $200.
and at this rate, the samsung galaxy note, with its five inch oled lcd, which just launched for $300 on contract, will be super cheap next year because there will be four other gigantic android tablet phones out by then. like this lg number that could take a good run at the psp vita or the kindle fire.
tl;dr, i loved the treo because of window 3.x nostalgia. it was not a robust piece of hardware, but it didn’t really need to be. it was a perfectly entertaining piece of kit. i had windows solitaire, a super nintendo emulator, a micro sd card with 1gb of 3gp videos dl’d off youtube, and a drawing program (with stylus) and word processor (with physical keyboard) that i used //constantly//. i never even turned on the 3g internet, i didn’t want to crash the whole system rendering a website on opera mini. 240x240 resolution screen was never going to get me a real browsing experience, but i could write a novel on that thing even today.
now, i still miss my physical keyboard (and not having to hold the phone sideways for a landscape photo), but once you have a fully functional web browser in your pocket all the time, with a good touchscreen? there’s no going back. also, APP CITY. while i was rocking the treo, and bemoaning that because the snes emulator wouldn’t register simultaneous button presses (jump + walk forwards) the only game i could play past level one was lemmings (which, again, windows 3.x nostalgia), i was also buying used gba games right and left, and mario golf advance on the gameboy micro is flawless, your argument is irrelaphant.
whereas today i have probably thirty games on this iphone that i paid 99 cents for. full ports of half a dozen old pc shooters, super monkey ball, angry birds, stair dismount. a full fledged gta3 clone, and a korean game studio (gamevil) pumping out delicious 16bit snes rpgs. plus shareware all over the map, including a full port of //myst//. so there’s no going back, as much as i’d like to just get the palm veer and call it done. (to be honest, if i still could, i would have by now. it was just too lovable.)
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/66710809/double-fine-adventure
Double Fine has started a kickstarter campaign to make a traditional adventure game. Tim Schafer is the guy behind Grim Fandango which is pretty much my favorite game ever (we have the original box from when Eric got it in high school sitting on our mantle) so I am loosing all of my cool over this. My cool is gone! Double Fine is officially TOO COOL FOR SCHOOL.
JESS I am RIGHT THERE WITH YOU with the nerd feelings and happy joy.
It’s so cool that that Notch guy was like “I’ll pay u 2 make dis game” and then Double Fine was like “Oh thats kewl bcuz we were just about 2 ask our fans to do tha same thing. Cool games all day every day I guess”
BASICALLY I am just happy that there’s some games in the pipeline that I can actually get stoked about. I always need my games to be drenched in aesthetics and propelled by a strong sense of character, and it’s so rare for the gaming industry to give you that.
So. YAYYYY
This is perhaps the best Kickstarter video I’ve ever seen.
Also, this guy makes the best video games ever.
this is my desktop background right now.
i made this by accident and now i can’t stop thinking about a sierra adventure game about katie west. (katie quest?) i don’t know what the gameplay would be like but probably something like maintaining a saucy 8bit tumblr, making friends with warren ellis, and being sent on adventure missions across time and space to collect magic cats and ingredients for The Best Cup of Coffee Evar.
patrick stewart would be in there somewhere, seeing everything, seeing //it all//.
i miss the epic scope, baroque humor, and lores abstraction of those games. (i also apparently need to get out more learn flash.)

Well, basically, yeah.
I’ve always maintained that this is the exact moment when the cylon plan began to fall apart.
TRICIA HELFER.
EVERYTHING YOU DID TO THIS SHOW WITH YOUR FACE.
THANK YOU.
(Also? Look at Doral. I kind of love him. It’s so hard to notice with all the SIX SIIIIIX going on, but he is being really genuine and complex here, calculating and longing at the same time. It’s the one sincere character moment the Five model had that wasn’t a hilarious one-liner. NOT THAT I DON’T LOVE HIS ONE-LINERS. But oh my god, Cylons, why do you do this to my heart.)
Tinkerbell as a POC (please let me know if anyone can find a source for this!)
plugged the image url into tineye.com and that led me to OH WHAT IT SPARKLES.

ahem. the first tineye link points to mamymyriam.centerblog.net/1726967-Ange-et-fee-suite, which was posted in 2007. the blog in question is french and appears to be a collection of geocities grade animated clip-art, so this was probably originally message board fan art, ffffound on the wilds of the internet, and never attributed to more than a forum handle? the other tineye links are to myspace or dead blogs.
BOMPH!!
This hilarious scene has always been one of my favorites from Masamune Shirow’s “Ghost in the Shell”. It’s so random and really packs a punch LOL!

Koobe’s Jin Yong Reader gets Mirasol, brings color to Taiwanese hearts — Engadget
[…] based on the same Qualcomm-heavy reference hardware, which pairs a 1GHz Snapdragon S2 with a 5.7-inch 1024 x 728 XGA Mirasol display. For those unaware, the addition of the latter part means the e-readers boast limited color on their non-backlit displays, all while retaining an E Ink-like low power draw.
so basically next years kindle (and nook kobo sony coby etc) will have a color screen with a month of battery life. SOLD.

that’s jack valenti, head of the mpaa until five years ago, speaking BEFORE CONGRESS in 1982 and likening the video cassette recorder to a murderer of women.
this is not about piracy, this is about monopoly politics. this is about terrible old men who are afraid of everything, and will fight any change for exactly as long as the public remains indifferent, then embrace it wholly because there’s money to be made.
these are the same rich dukes who have stood against every social movement in american history from women’s suffrage to civil rights, who supported slavery and the homestead act, who were against medicare and osha, who today protest gay marriage, abortion, islam, and mexicans.
old white conservatives are the worst people in the world. they have been on the wrong side of history for as long as we’ve been writing it down.
