Just realised I never got around to posting any photos of my nerfpunk costume from Steamcon here in Seattle way back in October. I’m very good at keeping up with things that relate to myself and only myself, aren’t I?
the intent behind nerfpunk, in case you haven’t been following along or just plain forgot cuz it’s been months (that’s more likely i’m sure), is to flip around the expectations of steampunk. A “typical” steampunk garment utilizes a weapon that they assemble to match the costume; typically, this is a nerf gun. The idea of nerfpunk was to reverse it - pick the gun and make the costume match it. That means no modding of the gun was allowed! I kind of cheated, in that I waited until they released their new little discs because I liked the colour scheme better… but it’s still heinously garish.
things i like:
• the sleeves. i spent most of my time on them (even more than the corset, which is kind of tragic really) because I wanted them to have a stupid number of layers. friendly mockery ;)
• the idea of the vinyl gun holster. it was made like 20 minutes before we hopped on the bus to the hotel so it’s not stable and I’d like to expand on it further.
I have some in progress shots that I’ll post after this. Mostly this costume was, unfortunately, more of an afterthought than I really wanted. I had way too many other costumes to prioritize (in that they were being made for a)children and b)people that are not myself), which left me little more than a week or so to create something from the sketches I’d been working on for months. I’d really like to go back into this costume with the intent to make it more than just some piecemeal assembly of ideas, but you know. when have i ever done that?(the other nerfpunker in the photos is my friend Melinda! she makes amazing costumes AND she won an award for this one in the bathing suit contest!)
My buddies in LA are the originators behind nerfpunk, and so Aidan, Melinda and myself were working on our own Nerfpunk costumes for last year’s Steamcon. I never finished mine (had SO MUCH TO DO for that con augh), but they finished theirs, and they are gorgeous, and they deserve reblogging. :)
BRILLIANT! Y’all give me a renewed interest in costuming. Eh, maybe once I’m no longer living with my mother….
I love everything about this.
I WANT TO GO THERE.
holy shit this is ridiculous and awesome
NERFPUNK. WHAT. YES.
“Protect the Person Behind You”
Masked shield corps protester at Occupy Oakland on January 28th with homemade shield and sign. A group of these people protected unarmed and legally-assembled civilian marchers during the Oakland Police Department attack on the action, including catching rubber bullets, baton blows, flashbang and teargas grenades, pepper balls, and beanbag weapons on their shields.
Her Ya Basta sign signals her membership in a long-running leftist group of the same name, who often take it upon themselves to protect vulnerable protesters at actions in this way.
Edit: on a personal note, it’s fascinating to see this kind of brilliant “character design” manifesting in real life. She’s the Space Marine of her time—customized armor, personal touches everywhere, absolutely hardassed and reliable in the face of an overwhelming, alien, indefatigable foe.
In the strange intersection of highly charged media images aimed at people with no real control over how they’re depicted, custom iconography becomes even more important. If you control your visual profile, and build a narrative around that, it resists spin and presentation. When Fox bashes Code Pink, the power of their image still forces them to use the Code Pink name, show the bright colors, and weakens the attempts to trash them.
This is the real power of Black Blocs, the Yes Men, the ELZN, beyond their numbers and activities, their iconography becomes its own narrative, and people interact directly with that, independently of potentially hostile reportage. Just like how even derogatory mentions cement loyalty to your favorite sports team.

Bless you, child.
Grim Hammer made this incredibly awesome Voltron costume for his daughter. But, as amazing as this painstakingly detailed costume is, it must be acknowledged that what makes it truly awesome is the amount of moxie radiating from this fierce little girl.
And just in case you were wondering if Grim Hammer has made any other awesome costumes (because we certainly were) you should check out Bumblee from Transformers, Megazord from Power Rangers, and, last but not least, a completely fearsome Predator!

1995 potf2 boba fett head (which is why all the paint is gone but the antenna is still there), 1997? removeable helmet vader that i modded with luke’s face inside, a trendmasters micro-playset godzilla, a tiny gashapon pikachu, and a mcdonalds tamagatchi keychain.
so my 9yo niece got house keys for the first time, and she didn’t have nearly enough ridiculous keychains, and i thought I CAN HELP HER WITH THIS. so after digging out some of mine and letting her pick her favorite powerpuff girl, i remembered that all my favorite keychains were still on my old bag i don’t use anymore and decided uncle nalgy wasn’t ostentatious enough.

It’s really hard to write about Mulan ‘cause everyone thinks she looks like this:
But in reality, she was a lot more bad-ass, so a more accurate depiction of her looks like this:
In fact, there are like, so many versions of this story ‘cause it was told…
Luckily, because I texted them to someone, two of my three favorite SDCC pics were salvaged!
I’ve never seen such brilliant cosplaying. EVER. All of these people nailed it SO HARD!
(Don’t mind creepy dude. He’s a dick and jumped in on my photo. I hate him.)
DR. HENRY KILLINGER. that’s almost as epic as warrior.
Some days you just can’t get rid of a bomb…
