htc lancaster - 3mp camera, micro-sd slot, sliding wide qwerty, touchscreen, and android. slick piece of kit, coming to att this summer.
palm pre - sliding mini-qwerty, 8gb onboard, new webos os, capacitive multitouch, 3mp camera, 600mhz processor. real keyboard beats the iphone 3g, but the new iphone about to be announced will probably give this a run for it’s money.
palm eos - treo form factor running probably webos, 2mp camera, 4gb onboard, proc speed unknow but probably solid. nice little rig, and coming to att this fall. (among other carriers, it’s the new centro!)
nokia n97 - symbian s60, 5mp cam with carl zeiss lens, 32gb onboard + micro-sd, sliding wide qwerty, lifeform detector, force-shield generator, cloaking device. seriously, this thing is ridiculous. if the rumored 1ghz processor pans out this will basically be a netbook that makes phonecalls. give me a video out and i’m set. which is good, because it’s going to be $700 and i’ll have to import the thing from europe.
i get a lot of use out of my treo, so i’m looking for something just as usable. the mini-qwerty is nice for winmo because it’s a clunky os and having keyboard shortcuts right there is fantastic. but probably irrelevant with webos or symbian. i’ll likely be able to afford the eos, which lists for $350 before rebates, whereas the pre is going to sprint anyhow. so a point in the eos’s favor.
but i’d love to get a wide qwerty given the amount of mobile typing i do; thus i’m probably choosing the lancaster or ponying up for an n97 if i can, although for $800 i can get the vaio p which is a real laptop… it’s a complex choice. i wouldn’t need a netbook if i got the n97 (or the lancaster, actually) but i’d also be limited to doing netbook activities on my phone. the n97 is too much, actually. for the price i could get the lancaster and a real digital camera and possibly also a netbook, and probably should.
and this isn’t even counting the new iphone almost definately being announced in a couple weeks at the apple developers conference; current rumor mill is saying at least doubling the processor and ram, plus 32gb onboard, plus video recording, and a jump to at least 3.2mp, possibly 5. that’s going to be a pretty slick rig, although i’d still be lamenting the fake keyboard; if i’m going to keep around my treo for precision text input, i’m probably making the wrong choice for a new phone.
