i actually saw that quote on wikipedia last season and gave it a pass as poor crowd-sourced phrasing.

but then they wrote an episode with an //actual asian annie// who was immediately declared to be “evil annie” by jeff winger.

but wait, i thought, surely the episode is going to end with white annie getting her comeuppance, overcoming her unconscious prejudice, and annie and annie becoming actual bffs.  team annie for reals!  season 2’s ‘hilary duff as regina george’ dialed up to eleven and dealing with meatier social issues!

then annie kim turned out to //actually be// manipulative and petty and selfish.  paired with actual alabaster tears from our ostensible heroine.

and i thought, well, hang on, white annie is already all of these things!  they’re //still// gaming our expectations, and there will still be a comeuppance, they’ll still actually become for reals bffs, and white stormie jeff winger will invite annie kim to join the group.  (kind of like when he let chang crash at his apartment last season, because he realized that chang is //a human being// and not a prop.)

but no.

instead they just kept reaffirming negative stereotypes, let white annie have a fake revelation about her own immaturity, and still had time for more wacky chang.

and the whole ‘britta competing with her old protester friend who turns out to not be in a foreign jail but instead a soccer mom’ thing i was expecting also didn’t pan out.  so instead i think this week’s ep ended with me deciding not to watch community anymore.
